Universal Logical Computation with Quantum LDPC Codes

on 09-10-2026

...

On October 9th, Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Lisbon branch, will host Bruno Coutinho for a seminar on Universal Logical Computation with Quantum LDPC Codes.

Quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes have attracted renewed interest since Panteleev and Kalachev demonstrated codes with good asymptotic properties in 2021. More recently, IBM proposed finite-size qLDPC codes combining relatively high rates and large distances while remaining compatible with realistic hardware architectures.

However, performing complex logical operations on these codes, including gate teleportation and magic state distillation, remains an open and active area of research.

The seminar will begin with a brief introduction to qLDPC codes and an explanation of why magic states are needed for universal quantum computation. Bruno Coutinho will then present recent progress in this area, focusing on the magic state distillation protocol developed by Shifan Xu and collaborators for the bicycle architecture.

The seminar will conclude with a discussion of major open challenges, particularly the simulation and decoding of the full protocol.

Date: October 9, 2026
Venue: IT Lisbon, 11th-floor seminar room (11:26)
Speaker: Bruno Coutinho - DLR (German Aerospace Center) and our former researcher

1st Portuguese Workshop on Neuromorphic Vision brings together researchers working on event-based vision

on 08-10-2026

...

The 1st Portuguese Workshop on Neuromorphic Vision, the first national meeting dedicated to event cameras and event-based vision, will take place on 8 October 2026, from 10:00 to 13:00, at Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.

Organised as a forum for researchers, students and professionals, the workshop will bring together members of the Portuguese scientific community working on event-based sensing and vision, providing an opportunity to exchange research results, discuss emerging scientific and technological challenges, and strengthen collaboration between academia, research institutions and industry.

Unlike conventional cameras, which capture complete images at fixed time intervals, event cameras asynchronously record changes in brightness as they occur. This approach enables microsecond-level temporal resolution, very low latency, high dynamic range, and reduced data and power requirements. These characteristics make event-based vision particularly promising for applications including robotics, autonomous systems, aerospace, industrial inspection, computational imaging and machine learning.

International keynote on event-based sensing for space:

The programme opens with a keynote by Dr. Scott McCloskey, Director of Computational Imaging at Kitware (USA) and an IEEE Signal Processing Society Distinguished Industry Speaker.

His talk, Event-Based Sensing for Space-Based Applications, will explore the potential of event-based sensors for space applications, where extreme lighting conditions, mostly static scenes, and high relative motion present significant challenges for conventional imaging technologies.

The keynote will focus on two applications: star tracking using event sensors for deep-space observation and vehicle re-identification in remote sensing.

Event-Based Vision research in Portugal

The workshop will also highlight ongoing research in Portugal, with contributions from researchers from the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Instituto Superior Técnico, Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, and the University of Leiria and Oeste.

The programme includes presentations on human attention mechanisms for robotics, event data structuring and encoding, event data coding for machine intelligence, and event-based video reconstruction and enhancement.

IT researchers João Ascenso (IT/Instituto Superior Técnico), Nuno Rodrigues (IT/Universidade de Leiria e Oeste), and Caroline Conti (IT/Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa), who are also the event organizers, will present their ongoing work in these areas.

The programme will conclude with a panel discussion, Event-Based Vision Research, Applications and Collaboration, moderated by Fernando Pereira (IT/Instituto Superior Técnico), bringing together the speakers to discuss research directions, applications and opportunities for collaboration.
