5th Edition of Smart Systems for AAL Summer School Celebrates Innovation in Intelligent Health and Environment Technologies

on 23-07-2025

... As part of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society’s 75th Anniversary Celebrations, the 5th Edition of the Smart Systems for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) International Summer School is being held from June 23 to 28, 2025, across two locations: ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon and the historic village of Penha Garcia, Portugal.

This summer school is designed to equip participants with hands-on, practical knowledge in the development of intelligent systems that support the ongoing digital transformation of society. The curriculum covers a broad interdisciplinary spectrum, including:
- Sensing and instrumentation for health status monitoring and environmental quality in both indoor and outdoor AAL scenarios;
- Artificial Intelligence and IoT-based solutions for healthcare and assisted living;
- Virtual and Extended Reality technologies;
- Integration of psychological and architectural perspectives in smart system design.

Participants will gain hardware and software expertise related to smart sensors, instrumentation, and intelligent environments, while exploring real-world applications of Ambient Assisted Living systems. A unique aspect of this edition is the combination of laboratory-based learning in Lisbon with in-field measurement experiences in Penha Garcia, offering a comprehensive and immersive educational journey.

The summer school is chaired by Octavian Postolache, senior researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações and Full Professor at ISCTE, and is co-organized by IT and the IEEE IMS Portugal Chapter.
This event continues to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and encourage innovation at the crossroads of engineering, healthcare, architecture, and behavioral sciences, ultimately enhancing the design and deployment of human-centric smart environments.
