IT is co-organizing the the IST Zoom seminar series Mathematics, Physics & Machine Learning. The aim is to bring together mathematicians and physicists interested in machine learning (ML) with ML and AI experts interested in mathematics and physics, with the goals of introducing innovative Mathematics and Physics-inspired techniques in Machine Learning and, reciprocally, applying Machine Learning to problems in Mathematics and Physics.

Project-based learning (PBL), flipped classroom (FC) and analogous methodologies have been widely accoladed as a natural evolution of established educational practices. Through such techniques, students can learn more independently using video lessons and other interactive teacher-mediated resources, as well as following an instructional model that guides them to find solutions to real world problems. Our work combines the ease of access to mobile devices (e.g. smartphones) with state-of-the-art software and hardware tools, as a way of enriching the teaching experience for students, namely in what concerns laboratory activities in the field of biomedical engineering. This work aims to involve students more actively in the learning process using case studies, project-based learning, active learning and research-based learning, while also providing an effective option for remote teaching (as recently needed with the curriculum changes required by the COVID-19 outbreak). In our approach (ScientIST) we explore the use of storing and sharing pedagogical materials formatted as Jupyter Notebooks on GitHub, for being the most widely used platform where the community of developers can build and share software. In particular, these can run Python scripts intended to guide the learning process, while also provide guidelines for various laboratorial classes across engineering fields (e.g. lab sessions using the Arduino MKR WIFI 1010, a variant of the popular electronic platform recently launched for prototyping Internet of Things (IoT) applications, the Google Science Journal (GSJ) for reporting, etc). The approach has shown promising results in a case study application and is now being extended into a replicable and easily scalable format.
Joana Pinto is a Master in Biomedical Engineering, who currently works as researcher at the Pattern and Image Analysis group from IT - Instituto de Telecomunicações. She has co-founded Clynx, an healthcare startup based in Lisbon and that develops digital health solutions, particularly in the physical rehabilitation field.
