The main lines of research and development in the Antennas and Propagation group include microwave and millimeter-wave antennas, radio wave propagation modelling, metamaterials and nanophotonics, encompassing both applied and fundamental research work.
The interests span short- to long-term application areas, including newspace communication technologies, next generation mobile and wireless technologies, and areas with large social impact related to environment sensing, and sensing for biomedical applications.
Examples of current research topics include development of low-mass, low-profile, low-cost antennas for broadband satellite-on-the-move, upgrading cubesat antenna design to TRL 9, RIS surfaces at THz for 6G, low profile super-resolution for microwave imaging, breast cancer screening and staging using microwave radar techniques, assessment of MW radar techniques for floating plastic litter detection in Oceans, fundamentally new concepts and architectures to obtain non-reciprocity in photonic materials with increased flexibility for the design of terahertz isolators, circulators, and related devices for cutting-edge photonic applications.
Activities are backed by well-equipped labs, with antenna measurement capabilities from 1 GHz to 110 GHz, and in-house advanced prototyping. The Group hosts several PhD and MSc students and has a good network of international contacts with publication co-authoring and staff and student exchange.
