Overview

The Optical Communications Laboratory of IT is suitably equipped to perform transmission experiments in Radio-over-Fibre systems and in up to 25 GHz optical networks by using external and direct modulation. Particularly, the laboratory is equipped with a Tektronix Arbitrary Waveform Generator at 24 Gsamples/s, an Agilent BER Tester N4906B up to 12.5 Gbit/s, an Agilent real time oscilloscope 81204A with 12 GHz bandwidth, a Tektronix Digital Serial Analyser DSA8200 equipped with the 80E08 electrical module, a Rhode & Schwarz electrical spectrum analyser (up to 18 GHz), an optical spectrum analyser with minimum resolution of 0.01 nm, an APEX optical spectrum analyser with resolution of 20 MHz (0.16 pm), and vector and analogue signal generators up to 20 GHz.

The laboratory is also equipped with several electrical devices as amplifiers, mixers, attenuators, filters, etc. Besides, the IT laboratory is equipped also with optical devices as tuneable optical sources, external modulators, directly modulated lasers, standard single-mode fibre, erbium doped fibre amplifiers, optical filters, optical circulators and couplers, dispersion compensation units, arrayed waveguide gratings and PIN photodetectors.

The optical communications laboratory of IT is equipped with more than 15 PCs Core II duo / I7 with processor speed of 2.66 GHz or more, 8 or more GB of RAM and 1 TB of hard drive, being suitable for extensive and complex simulation analysis of optical communication systems. The laboratory is also equipped with an extensive list of home-made routines employed for simulation and performance evaluation of state-of-the-art optical fibre communication systems.
