IT researchers in the top 2% of most-cited scientists worldwide

Researchers from the Instituto de Telecomunicações have earned prestigious recognition on both lists, which include more than 200,000 names. Twenty-eight IT researchers are recognized for their career-long contributions, and twenty-three for their single-year impact, resulting in fifty-one nominations.

Bio

Fernando Guiomar received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 2009 and 2015, respectively. In 2015, he has received a Marie Skłodowska-Curie individual fellowship, project Flex-ON (grant agreement 653412), jointly hosted by Politecnico di Torino, Italy, and CISCO Optical GmbH, Nuremberg. In 2016, he has received the Photonics21 Student Innovation Award, distinguishing industrial-oriented research with high impact in Europe. In 2017, he has joined Instituto de Telecomunicações - Aveiro as an assistant researcher responsible for the national research infrastructure ORCIP, aimed at the testing and prototyping of future 5G solutions involving novel optical and radio technologies.

In 2020, he was awarded a 3-year research contract by the “la Caixa” Foundation, within the framework of the highly competitive Postdoctoral Junior Leader Fellowship program (ID 100010434). His main research interests are focused within the area of fiber-based and free-space optical communication systems, including the development of digital signal processing algorithms, advanced modulation and coding, constellation shaping and nonlinear modelling and mitigation. Fernando Guiomar is an IEEE and OSA member and he has authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific publications in leading international journals and conferences.
