Joana Pereira, Cristiano Gonçalves and Diogo Barros, a team of researchers from IT in Aveiro and Ph.D. students at the University of Aveiro, have obtained the first place in the Student Design Competition “Video Bandwidth Enhancement for High Power Amplifiers” held within the European Microwave Week 2018 (https://www.eumweek.com/), in Madrid (September 23-28).
The challenge consisted on the design and development of a RF power amplifier using state-of-the-art Gallium Nitrade (GaN) transistors from AMPLEON Netherlands B.V., the organizer of this competition. The goal was to achieve the highest video-bandwidth, under a specific two-tone signal excitation, without compromising the output power, gain and power efficiency. The team, supervised by Telmo Cunha and Pedro Cabral (professors at Departamento de Eletrónica, Telecomunicações e Informática – University of Aveiro and researchers at IT in Aveiro), designed one prototype that achieved the best performance indicators among all others presented by the competing teams. At an early stage 10 teams were registered, four of which did not go through the first phase of the qualification. Of the remaining six, only three teams were present on the final day of the competition to carry out the measures.
