IT in Covilhã organized the 29th Seminar of the Thematic Network for Mobile Communications (RTCM), an online event that brought together researchers and industry professionals to share experiences and results within their fields.

With over 90 participants, the seminar was held via Zoom and featured three keynotes and 11 presentations on several topics, such as Internet of Things, Wireless Power Transmission, Vehicular Networks, Underwater and Underground Communications, among others.

Keynote speakers included Lorenza Giupponi from Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC, Spain) and Helder Fontes from INESC-TEC, who both explored the potentialities of the widely adopted Network Simulator 3 (ns-3), a discrete-event network simulator for Internet Systems.

The third keynote speaker was Rose Hu, from Utah State University (USA), who is an IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Distinguished Lecturer. Her speech identified architectures where an UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) can be considered either a user that has computation tasks to be executed; a relay to assist users in offloading computation tasks; or a Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) server that executes computation tasks.

The RTCM acts as a forum for different players in the mobile communications sector — research centers, universities, service providers, operators, and industry — to exchange knowledge and experiences. The network, coordinated by Manuel Ricardo (INESC-TEC/FEUP), promotes collaboration among its members and supports various initiatives, like Summer/Winter schools, tutorial days, invited talks and workshops.

RTCM’s main event, however, is its semi-annual seminar. Their 30th seminar will be held at IT in Aveiro, on July 1st 2021.
