BacalhauNET, a team with José Rosa, a Master's student in Electrotechnical Engineering at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão (ESTG) of the Polytechnic of Leiria, was the big winner of the ITU AI/ML in 5G Grand Challenge, an international competition on Artificial Intelligence (AI) promoted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
In addition to the student José Rosa, the team also includes Daniel Granhão, Guilherme Carvalho and Tiago Filipe Gonçalves, Ph.D. students at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and collaborators at the Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC).
The team was guided by Mónica Figueiredo, supervisor of José Rosa, professor at ESTG and researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Luís Conde Bento, professor at ESTG and researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics – Coimbra (ISR-UC), Nuno Paulino and Luís Pessoa, professors at FEUP and researchers at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Center at INESC TEC.
In this competition, participants are challenged to solve real-world problems based on standardized technologies developed for AI in 5G networks. The challenge aims to create a knowledge community, providing open source solutions to problems related to communications networks using AI and involving students and researchers on ITU standards.
The BacalhauNET team competed in the open challenge “Lightning-Fast Modulation Classification with Hardware-Efficient Neural Networks”, with 12 other teams. The main objective was to use quantification, scattering, custom topology design, and other techniques to design a neural network.
“It is a pleasure to be part of this team! Their dedication, competence, and ingenuity were recognized with this award, which makes me very proud. The results achieved also show the added value that collaboration between different teaching and research institutions can bring in the production of results of international excellence”, says IT researcher Mónica Figueiredo.
