The Ph.D. thesis entitled "Fault-tolerant predictive control of PMSGs in offshore wind turbines", supervised by our senior researchers Sérgio Cruz and André Mendes, from IT Coimbra, was recognized as the "Best Ph.D. Thesis" defended in Portuguese Higher Education Institutions in the years 2021 and 2022, within one of the scientific areas of IEEE.
His author, Pedro Gonçalves, proposed new fault-tolerant control strategies for six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), typically found in offshore wind turbines. PMSMs are increasingly used in offshore wind energy conversion systems and other critical applications such as aerospace, aviation, and electric propulsion.
Pedro Gonçalves has developed several innovative control, diagnostic, and fault-tolerant algorithms applicable to high-power wind generators, contributing to the enhancement of their efficiency and reliability.
