As part of the Route25 project, demonstrations were held at the Parque de Exposições de Aveiro on September 17, 2025. IT-Porto successfully showcased its sphere-based collision detection approach using PixKit 2.0, an autonomous driving development kit. The collision detection system was integrated into Autoware, an open-source software platform for autonomous driving.
The sphere-based approach represents vehicles as sets of overlapping 3D spheres. A collision between two objects is detected when the distance between the centers of their spheres is less than the sum of their radius.
The demonstration featured a 5-foot inflated beach ball, used as a static object, which was rolled into PixKit's lane to test collision detection. The ball was detected once it entered the ego-vehicle's braking distance, triggering collision warnings and bringing the vehicle to a stop. Once the ball cleared the ego vehicle's trajectory, the vehicle resumed movement. The event was attended by demonstration participants, media representatives, and invited guests.
