POEMS is the Portuguese Competence Centre for Semiconductors, a cutting-edge initiative within the European Integrated Circuits Initiative, directly addressing the critical needs outlined in the National Semiconductor Strategy.

On October 14, POEMS was officially presented at the Centro de Ciência Viva in Lisbon, with the participation of the organizations that make up the consortium.

Focusing on strategic areas such as chip design, packaging, and emerging semiconductor technologies, POEMS brings together the diverse expertise of 16 partners, including prestigious academic and research institutions such as the Instituto de Telecomunicações.

During the event, our researcher Miguel Drummond delivered a presentation on the PIX Europe project, which is part of this initiative.

To tackle the current challenges in the semiconductor sector, POEMS aims to:

  • Provide advanced training in chip design, advanced packaging, and emerging technologies;
  • Support industrial stakeholders in developing semiconductor solutions;
  • Facilitate access to the European Network of Competence Centres in Chips, the Chip Design Platform, and Pilot Lines;
  • Support access to the Chips Fund and private investment, including venture capital.

POEMS strengthens Portugal’s semiconductor industry by promoting collaboration and consolidating resources. The project is structured into specific initiatives to ensure effective implementation and lasting impact.

The Semiconductor Observatory will be responsible for mapping, monitoring, and assessing the national ecosystem to support policy development, network building, and engagement in European initiatives that foster partnerships and identify new opportunities.

Furthermore, POEMS will promote upskilling and reskilling programs through talent mapping, advanced training, mentoring, and business planning, facilitating access to funding, investment, and consultancy services for matchmaking, resources, and technology transfer in the semiconductor field.

The initiative is co-funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Chips Joint Undertaking - European Union.
