On December 15, Iscte awarded “honoris causa” doctorates to three prominent figures in science, industrial innovation and journalism, namely the engineer and academic Carlos Salema, business leader Isabel Furtado, and journalist Teresa de Sousa. The ceremony took place at the university’s Grand Auditorium in Lisbon.
Besides individual recognition, the university also highlights the connection of the three honorees to Iscte’s areas of teaching and research, such as information technologies, management, journalism, and communication sciences.
Carlos Salema, founder and former President of the Instituto de Telecomunicações, and former president of JNICT (currently, FCT), is described as “a source of inspiration” for the university’s technological development, particularly in its international project testing the new generation of multicore optical fibre.
The formal session included laudatory speeches for the three awardees. Our researcher and professor at Iscte, Luís Ducla Soares, praised the exceptional life and work of Carlos Salema. Due to health issues, the award was received by Carlos Salema's wife, Mrs Helena Salema.
