The Lisbon Unit for Learning and Intelligent Systems (LUMLIS) is one of the 30 new units joining the ELLIS network — the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems — and it aims to actively contribute “to defining and executing the European AI strategy in the next decade, fostering the rapid development of AI technologies and promoting their use for addressing societal challenges and maximizing economic impact”.

LUMLIS will be hosted by Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), with a team of renowned researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), among which are IT researchers Mário Figueiredo and André Martins, Arlindo Oliveira, André Lopes and Ana Paiva (IST/INESC-ID), and José Santos-Victor (IST/ISR).

“In Portugal, there are a group of companies with a very high technological level — some world leaders in their areas — many of which actively collaborate with universities, in joint research projects and in advanced training. LUMLIS intends to increase and stimulate this type of synergistic collaborations, from which there is much to be gained”, said Mário Figueiredo, LUMLIS coordinator.

Born in 2018, ELLIS is a European grassroots initiative that focuses on research and the advancement of modern AI. It aims to tackle current barriers when it comes to retaining top talent in European AI institutions, such as the lack of competitive salaries, high teaching obligations in universities and rigid environments that do not support a fluid relationship with industry players.

The ELLIS network brings together 14 European countries, a number of world-class institutions and several big-name companies, such as Audi, AVL, Bayer, Bosch, Deep-Mind, Greiner, Porsche Siemens, Amazon, Facebook, Google, NVIDIA and Qualcomm.
