João Ascenso, researcher at the Multimedia and Signal Processing Group at Instituto de Telecomunicações, talked with “90 Segundos de Ciência” (Episode 1194) about his project DARING. This project aims to create a new compression standard that allows compressing images while maintaining a high level of quality.
The DARING project is part of an evolution of previous image compression standards, namely the popular JPEG standard, and aims to improve the quality offered by these standards, ensuring an image with better quality for the final consumer.
This project also aims to create efficient representations for the consumption of these images, not only by people but also by intelligent machines.
In this way, it will be possible to use these standards in the automatic analysis of visual content that today have different applications, from medical imaging to image processing by autonomous vehicles, improving the quality of available images and reducing the space needed to store them.
The DARING – Deep compression: an emerging paradigm for Image codiNG project is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
