Stanford University and the publisher Elsevier released an update of the list of the top 2% of the most-cited scientists in various disciplines, such as Artificial Intelligence & Image Processing, Optoelectronics & Photonics, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Information and Communications Technologies, Networking & Telecommunications, and Enabling & Strategic Technologies. The study covers 22 major fields, and 176 subfields, and includes more than 200,000 researchers. The data is shown separately for career-long and single-year impacts.

From the list of 200 thousand names, 19 IT researchers are listed for career-long impact:

André Martins (IT-IST); Carlos Fernandes (IT-IST); José Bioucas-Dias (IT-IST); Marko Beko (IT-IST); Mário Figueiredo (IT-IST); Mário Silveirinha (IT-IST); Paulo André (IT-IST); Jonathan Rodriguez (IT-UA); Nuno Borges Carvalho (IT-UA); Shahid Mumtaz (IT-UA); José Carlos Pedro (IT-UA); Stanislav Maslovski (IT-UA); Sérgio Cruz (IT-UC); André Mendes (IT-UC); Joel Rodrigues (IT–Covilhã); Hugo Proença (IT–Covilhã); Filipe Manuel Clemente (IT-Covilhã); Octavian Postolache (IT-ISCTE); Ivan Pires (IT-Covilhã).

Respectively, 20 IT researchers are acknowledged as the most influential in 2021:

So, twenty-six IT researchers are among the most-cited scientists worldwide, falling within the top 2% in their respective scientific fields; and, in the top 10 of the most cited scientists in Portugal, two are from IT: the late José Bioucas-Dias and Mário Figueiredo.
