Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) proudly participated in the Ciência Viva no Laboratório initiative to explore the frontiers of science and technology through hands-on workshops in Telecommunications, Electronics, 5G, and Biomedical Engineering.
Throughout July 2025, IT hosted three dynamic internships specifically designed for students from the 9th to 12th grades, including those in professional education. Held at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and the University of Beira Interior (UBI), the workshops immersed participants in cutting-edge areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
Workshops offered in 2025:
Introduction to Telecommunications (INTELE), Promoted by Prof. António Topa (IT – IST)
Introduction to Biosignals (INBIO), Promoted by Prof. Hugo Silva (IT – IST)
Introduction to Electronics and 5G Communications (IEC - 5G), Promoted by Prof. Fernando Velez (IT – UBI)
From exploring biosignals and biomedical instruments to learning the fundamentals of telecommunication systems and the potential of 5G technology, the workshops offered a hands-on introduction to some of today’s most transformative technologies. Students also gained exposure to topics such as artificial intelligence, visited labs, start-ups, the Faraday Museum, and even toured the Covilhã Data Center.
For many, this is the chance to their first encounter with university research environments, new interests, and potential career ambitions in science, tech and engineering.
