Work Objectives:
This project aims to investigate new coding and processing methods for panoramic visual information, captured with 360-degree field of view, and ultra-high definition, i.e. All-Around UHD (AA-UHD) video, promoting the development of new applications in this area. The research tasks are based on AA-UHD video content, acquired by a system with multiple high-definition cameras, synchronized at frame level, each one responsible for acquiring part of the 360- degree field of view. The AA-UHD video images are acquired in the form of multiple fields of view and then combined with stitching algorithms to create the all-around image. The project will investigate computational methods for high-efficiency compression with low computational complexity based on machine learning and parallel processing models with distributed data.
Part of the research to develop in the project is the identification and coding of different types of regions of interest, using new scalability dimensions applicable to non-compressed and compressed formats. Within this Grant, the work program will be focused on the extraction and coding of visual objects captured in the omnidirectional domain. Techniques based on machine learning, such as convolutional neural networks (e.g. auto-encoders), will be investigated for object-based encoding in smart surveillance scenarios followed by software integration in the scalable coding framework designed for the AroundVision project.
Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia.
