Networks and Services
Telecommunications and Networking – Av
Enrollment in a Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering, computer science, or equivalent, with proven background and experience in networking and telecommunications, specifically 5G and beyond, and the application of network and service virtualization principles therein. Note: The candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral program.
The candidate will be a core team member on a ground-breaking project for a leading global provider of information and communications technology infrastructure. The work will focus on the development of software and system building over cloud tools, creating new cloud-based network mechanisms. It is important that the candidate have some knowledge of Network Function Virtualization, Software Defined Networking, Cloud-based Networks and 5G, and must have proven experience in implementing and deploying software components integrating with tools such as OpenStack (mandatory), OSM (mandatory), OpenFlow, P4, NPLANG and similar approaches. The candidate will develop knowledge to work on new 6G mechanisms integrating network and cloud computing mechanisms, with the latter supporting intrinsic procedures that usually are handled by specific network nodes or stacks. The work will: i) explore the necessary enhancements to be done to existing virtualization and compute mechanisms, in order to support different networking procedures (from both the perspective of the network and the end-user terminals or services) in a dynamic, performant and adaptative way, and ii) integrate with optimization algorithms that support the location of services (e.g., edge or elsewhere), the resources allocated to different users/devices, SLA’s and other requirements.
The candidate will be required to study the state-of-the-art, understand the requirements of the system, and help in the design of the overall system architecture. The candidate will then proceed to implement a software proof of concept of the novel network-supportive cloud computing mechanisms. The candidate will be required to implement virtualized infrastructure management and orchestration mechanisms, considering enhancements over existing deployments, such as OpenStack and OSM, over a Linux infrastructure, and must already have experience in implementing for those systems. The candidate will be required to deploy such mechanisms in conjunction with cutting-edge commercial-graded development mobile network, and a national research institute-level datacenter.
The candidate will be required to submit two papers: one conference paper and one journal article, to distinguished venues, agreed on by their supervisors. The papers have to be of high quality. Additionally, the candidate will participate in patent-submission.
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. For direct access to the FCT RBI go to the following link https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt (Reg. 950/2019, published in the DR of 16 December).
|Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Prof. Daniel Corujo and Prof. Rui Aguiar.
12 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: June 2021 (or soon thereafter).
1.250€. The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 40% + C2 x 50% + C3 x 10%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
|Communication of the results:
Results will be published at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, in Aveiro. The selected candidate will be notified by email.
Motivation letter explaining the interest in the position, Detailed Curriculum Vitae with transcripts and degree certificate. Apply online clicking on the “Apply Now” button in this form.
After the notification of the results, candidates have 10 working days if they wish to contest the decision.
