Research grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular: candidates must be enrolled in a graduate (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) program in the areas of Electrical Engineering.
Work Objectives:
The project LandMark (Light Communication Detection and Ranging) targets the integration of LIDAR and optical wireless communication within the same systems for the support autonomous vehicles environments. We have demonstrated an optical wireless communication system that transmits at 4 Gbit/s and by processing the reflected communication waveform is able to localize targets with 15 cm resolution. This high bit rates are achieved by using narrow collimate laser beams which need to be precisely aligned and maintained. One approach that we have being pursuing is the use of a micromirror to steer the optical beam and a feedback tracking system based on the reflected signal from the target.

The student will become familiar with the optical steering and tracking system and will be involved in the characterization and performance evaluation of the system. The student will have the opportunity to become familiar with state-of-the-art equipment. The project is organized in the following tasks:
-Task 1 – Characterization of the micromirror steering system in terms of steering speed and stability.
Task 2- Evaluation of the performance of the communication link for a moving user.
Task 3- Optimization of the micromirror steering feedback system.
Task 4 – Oral presentation and discussion of the results and written report.
Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 123/2019, dated August 28 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Coimbra, under the supervision of Prof. Maria do Carmo Medeiros
Duration:
1 month, with no possibility of renewal. Start date: 1 of September 2022.
Monthly salary:
486,12 € according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ). The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 60% + C2 x 30% + C3 x 10%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
