Title: Research Grant - BIPD/Nº6 - 30/01/2020 - FIREFRONT - PCIF/SSI/0096/2017
Funding Reference Number: BIPD/Nº6 - 30/01/2020 - FIREFRONT- PCIF/SSI/0096/2017
Summary: A research position for one grant (Pós-Doutoramento - BIPD) on image processing field is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações and supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) in the scope of the Project FIREFRONT (Real¬Time Forest Fire Mapping and Spread Forecast Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). PCIF/SSI/0096/2017. The grant will begin in March 2020, or soon thereafter, with a duration of 2 year.
Scientific Area: Networks and Multimedia
Group: Pattern and Image Analysis – Lx
Admission Requirements: 1. PhD in the area of signal/image processing. 2. Background in the fields of image processing, machine learning, and computer science. 3. Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences. 4. Programming skills in matlab and C/C++. 5. Strong scientific skills and background on CNNs and DNNs. 6. Good written and spoken English skills. (DGES): https://www.dges.gov.pt/pt
Work Objectives: The work will address fire classification/detection based on the visible and thermal images and videos acquired onboard of an UAV. Two complementary approaches will be conducted: semi¬supervised and supervised. An initial semi-supervised method will be applied while the number of training samples is scarce. After this stage supervised or active learning and deep neural network (DNN) methods will be considered. The signatures that forest fires typical impinge on the cameras will be explored, i.e., strong reflectance in the red channel and presence of smoke, in the case of RGB images, and high intensity spots, in the case of thermal images. To improve the classification/segmentation accuracy, discriminative classifiers with the inclusion of spatial contextual information will also be explored. Methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), recently developed in the context of maritime scenarios will be tested and improved to address the new type of data. Additionally, the temporal correlation among acquired video frames will also be considered to improve the fire localization.
Applicable legislation: A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and ” Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019.pdf
