Research position for Post-Doctoral Research Grant- BPD Nº2021/00095
Funding Reference Number:
BPD Nº2021/00095- JoCoNet
One (1) research position for one (1) Post-Doctoral Research Grant (“Bolsa de Pós-Doutoramento”) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of project JocoNet – Joint Optimization of Computing and Networking. The work for this position is in the general area of wireless networking, with emphasis on next generations 5G and beyond, network optimization, and heterogeneous networking.
Scientific Area:
Networks and Services
Telecommunications and Networking – Av
Admission Requirements:
Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent, with proven background and experience in wireless communications, specifically 5G and beyond. The candidate must show knowledge and hands-on experience in network optimization and simulations. Experience in simulations using Matlab and/or NS2/3 is a must. The PhD degree must have been obtained in the three years prior to the date of submission of this scholarship application.
Work Objectives:
The candidate will work on network design and optimization, for the new concept of networking, which integrates networking with computing domains. The work will address network optimization challenges, by determining where services are located in the edge, the resources allocated to different users/devices and dedicated to different services, in addition to association of users with services, based on their location, requirements, and prospective SLAs. The candidate will be required to study the state-of-the-art, understand the requirements of the system, and help in the design of the overall system architecture. The candidate will then proceed to formulate an optimization problem, defining its goals, which may include “not limited to” energy efficiency, delay optimization, user satisfaction, etc., in addition to formulating the adequate constraints (which have to be agreed on by supervisor and partners in the project). The candidate will be required to design an efficient solution for the proposed optimization problem, and show its performance, through analytical models and simulations. The candidate will be required to implement some of the proposed algorithms on practical testbeds. The candidate will be required to submit at least two papers: one conference paper and one journal article, to venues, agreed on by their supervisors. The papers have to be of high quality.
Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. For direct access to the FCT RBI go to the following link (Reg. 950/2019, published in the DR of 16 December).
Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Dr. Ayman Radwan and Prof. Rui Aguiar.
6 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: June 2021 or soon thereafter.
Monthly salary:
1,646.00€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal ( ). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection criteria:
  • C1 (40%)
    Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation
  • C2 (50%)
Suitability of the candidates’ profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan
  • C3 (10%)
Fluency in oral and written English

Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 40% + C2 x 50% + C3 x 10%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
  • Prof. Ayman Mohamed Metwally Radwan, Instituto de Telecomunicacoes Aveiro (President of the jury)
  • Prof. Daniel Nunes Corujo, Universidade de Aveiro
  • Prof. Rui Luis Andrade Aguiar, Universidade de Aveiro
