Creating and sharing knowledge for telecommunications

Project: Ultra-high-capacity free-space optical communications for beyond 5G

Acronym: FreeCom-B5G
Main Objective:
The main scientific objectives of the FreeComm-B5G project are:
1. In-depth modelling of FSO-related impairments associated with atmospheric turbulence and mechanical-induced pointing errors;
2. Improve FSO capacity and reliability through the development of advanced mitigation measures aided by machine-learning algorithms;
3. Demonstrate an ultra-reliable (>99.9999%) and ultra-high-capacity (>400 Gb/s) outdoor FSO link over long-term measurements with varying weather conditions;
4. Integrate the developed FSO transmission system with the ORCIP research infrastructure to support high-capacity beyond 5G fronthauling/backhauling.
