Project: Galactic Emission Mapping

Acronym: GEM
Main Objective:
1st Phase of the Galactic Emission Mapping Project at Portugal
-Develop a polarimeter/correlator to detect and map the polarized microwave emission from the Milky Way (
-Use of novel design for a base-band complex I/Q digital correlator based on progammable logic devices (Altera FPGA chip).
-Installation of the polarimeter in C-band cassegrain antenna (9-m) for a 1yr observation.
- merge the North Hemsiphere maps with South Hemisphere map form Brazil and produce the biggest high sensitivity quasi all-sky map at C-band.
-Feed these maps into Principle Component Separation algorythms in Data processing Pipeline of the Planck surveyor satellite (ESA, 2008) for microwave decontamination.
