Abstract
A new method for a fast and fine control to flatten the gain of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) is presented. The method is based on the acousto-optic effect in fibers using only one Long Period Gratings. This kind of device can be projected to fit varying shapes of gain, i.e., spectrum by choosing different PZT loads. It can flatten not only the spectrum of an EDFA, but also other erbium gain spectrums with fast time response (17 µs) and gain-flatness ~ 1.5 dB. This device has the advantage of easy fabrication and has potential application in gain-flattening in WDM systems.
