Abstract
In this work a fast intra mode decision algorithm to reduce the encoding complexity of the HEVC (High Efficient Video Coding) intra mode decision is proposed. The algorithm constrains the set of modes to be tested by defining a subset of modes chosen according to the directionality of the current PU (Prediction Unit) texture. In addition, it exploits interlevel correlation introduced by the HEVC hierarchical quad-tree structure, which is observed between the orientation of the dominant edge of the current PU and the neighboring PUs encoded in the inferior tree depth. Experimental results demonstrated that the algorithm presented in this work provides a decrease of up to 34.44% in the HEVC intra prediction processing time, with a little increase in the bit-rate (0.85% on average) and a negligible reduction in PSNR values.
