This paper presents a motion-based control device for user-interaction with different types of multimedia content, particularly targeting the forthcoming services and applications using three dimensional audiovisual content in Android equip- ment. The general system architecture is presented as a functional layered model of both the remote control and its associated set-top-box. The proposed system includes motion-based control algorithms with dynamic adaptation to different environmental conditions and sensor data accuracy. At the set-top-box side the interface is implemented using a virtual USB-HID. Two different options are possible for sensor data processing, either at the remote control device or at the STB. Operational and usability results are presented and discussed along with hardware performance in terms of energy consumption.
