Abstract
This paper addresses the feasibility and implementation of a real-time spatial diversity algorithm at 28 GHz (5G). A 2×2 Alamouti coder and decoder is implemented using reconfigurable logic devices (FPGA) and its resource usage compared to those in the literature. The proposed system uses a pipelined MIMO-OFDM architecture that diminishes hardware footprint when compared to traditional modulation schemes. The achieved results demonstrate the importance of FPGA resource optimisation, showing how depend coding and modulation are to hardware resources. Such topic is of vital importance especially with current wireless communications focus on future Massive MIMO solutions, where hardware needs increase dramatically.
