Abstract
Point-to-multipoint coherent transceivers are an efficient solution to support the hub-and-spoke traffic pattern that is present in metro-aggregation networks. This paper proposes to combine the utilization of these transceivers in horseshoe networks with the use of a node architecture based on 2-by-2 couplers and customized deployment of pre-amplifiers. A mathematical model to minimize the total number of required amplifiers is detailed and used to evaluate the pros and cons of this architecture compared to common ones based on pairing 1-by-2 splitters and combiners.
