Abstract
In this paper, the impact of combining view synthesis with light field compression is analyzed. Two approaches are compared: (1) the standard approach, which encodes the full light field, and (2) encoding a sparsely sampled light field and reconstructing the missing views through view synthesis. These methods are tested across six light fields, using JPEG Pleno and two VVC configurations. The performance of both methods is compared with the original light field using objective quality metrics. Based on the obtained results, a discussion on the influence of view synthesis on light field compression performance is presented, along with the potential benefits of using it in this context. In particular, it was concluded that using view synthesis might enable smaller data sizes while maintaining comparable light field quality.
