The eye scan ultrasound system (ESUS) is intended for detection and quantitative assessment of cataract type and severity, as well as for the estimation of cataract hardness and optimal phacoemulsification energy, in real time.
On clinical practice, cataract is mainly diagnosed by slit lamp observation, providing subjective assessment of cataract severity. The phacoemulsification is the most common surgical procedure for cataract extraction. The cataractous lens is fragmented into small pieces using ultrasounds or laser, aspired and replaced by an artificial lens. Some surgical and post-surgical complications are associated to those procedures, and part of them relates to excessive phacoemulsification energy. Nowadays, there is not a clinical method to objectively predict the effective phacoemulsification energy.
The assessment of the severity, type and hardness of the cataract and the automatic determination of the optimal phacoemulsification energy level, in real time, will allow optimize the surgical procedure, minimizing the associated risks and surgical time.
