Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at IT and an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Science and Technology of ISCTE-IUL.
I joined Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) in 2010 as a full time Researcher to work in the European Commission’s project 3D VIVANT (Live Immerse Video-Audio Interactive Multimedia), under the supervision of Professors Luís Ducla Soares and Paulo Nunes.
One year later, I started my PhD at ISCTE-IUL and IT with the same supervisors. My PhD work, which I finished in June 2017, was focused on immersive visual media, with major contributions to the area of light field content processing, representation, and coding.
This long-term collaboration with IT has been proven very fruitful. More significantly, I have had the opportunity to participate in many national and international scientific research projects in the area of novel immersive visual media. In addition, in 2017, I was awarded with the 27th edition of the IBM Scientific Prize for the work entitled Efficient Solutions for Light Field Coding.
Last year, I successfully applied to the FCT Stimulus of Scientific Employment 2017 program and, at that time, I had no doubt I would choose IT as my host institution. Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at IT and an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Science and Technology of ISCTE-IUL.
I am well aware that the support and guidance received from IT were essential to the results I have achieved so far. For this reason, I am fully motivated and confident that this collaboration with IT will continue proving valuable for advancing my career as a researcher.

Over the past three years, I have been involved in three large-scale European research projects: H2020 5GENESIS, H2020 ECSEL SEMI40, and CATRENE MOBITRUST.(see more)
I joined the Mobile Systems research group at IT-Aveiro, as a researcher, in 2010, and in the same year, I started doing my PhD in MAP-tele Doctoral Programme in Telecommunications, a joint degree offered by three Portuguese universities: University of Minho, University of Aveiro, and University of Porto. I worked under the supervision of Prof. Jonathan Rodriguez and Prof. Manuel Violas. My PhD thesis was focused on applying game theory to address energy efficiency challenges in 5G mobile networks and smart grid, which was evaluated as deserving of distinction and merit. I applied: 1) Coalitional Games to stimulate a set of rational mobile nodes to cooperate and optimally select relay nodes to extend their battery life, without compromising their quality-of-service; and 2) Stackelberg Game to enhance demand response in smart grid, analysing strategic interactions between a utility company and its subscribed users. My PhD study was funded by FCT and hosted by IT-Aveiro, where I was involved in three multidisciplinary European research projects: ENIAC E2SG, FP7-ICT C2POWER, and FP7-ICT HURRICANE. This helped me gain an invaluable experience in conducting collaborative research and acquiring considerable transferable skills. I completed my PhD in 2016 and started working as a Senior Researcher at University of Aveiro, and more recently at IT-Aveiro. Over the past three years, I have been involved in three large-scale European research projects: H2020 5GENESIS, H2020 ECSEL SEMI40, and CATRENE MOBITRUST. Within these projects, my responsibilities range from conducting research and disseminating findings to national and international venues to undertaking project management roles (e.g., writing project proposals for attracting research funding from European Commission or FCT, leading work packages and tasks, writing project reports and deliverables, etc.) and supervising post-graduate students. I am an IEEE Senior Member, and my current research interests include applying machine learning and artificial intelligence for: i) intrusion detection in cyber-physical systems; ii) malware detection in Android mobile phones; and iii) radio resource management in 5G mobile systems.
